Prices of basic commodities stable

April 4, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — City Administrator Ferdinand Caylao said over the weekend that prices of basic commodities in this city were found to be stable and relatively lower than the suggested retail prices (SRP).
This, despite the recent increase in fuel prices brought about by political unrest in oil exporting countries.
Caylao and City Economic and Enterprise Division Chief Lenny Esguerra, together with officials from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), made the rounds of supermarkets, groceries and the wet market here to inspect and check the prices of basic and prime commodities as outlined in the trade agency’s SRP checklists.
“We found out that shelf prices of basic commodities like milk, sugar and canned goods in stores all over the city are lower than the DTI’s SRP. We are continuously monitoring the prices of commodities to ensure that consumers will be protected despite the increasing prices of oil,” Caylao, a former DTI director, told Sun.Star Pampanga.
He added that some ten weighing scales were confiscated from unscrupulous vendors at the wet market.
“The weighing scales were not calibrated. We had to confiscate them dahil kawawa naman ang mga kababayan natin kung kulang sa timbang ang binayaran naman nila ng tama,” he said.
“Here in the City of San Fernando, we want to be known also as ‘consumer-friendly’ on top of being business-friendly,” concluded Caylao.
