Lacson Reaches Out To Estrada

MANILA, Philippines — After almost three years of having a rather cold relationship, Sen. Panfilo M. Lacson has decided to make peace with his former boss, former President Joseph Estrada.

Lacson is now reaching out to Estrada that they meet and smoke the peace pipe and may decide to no longer look back in anger. Told that Estrada’s son, Senate President Pro Tempore Jose ‘’Jinggoy’’ Estrada, is willing to set up a meeting or dinner between Lacson and the former Chief Executive, Lacson said he is amenable to it. Estrada, a former action movie actor, is 74. Lacson is 63.
The meeting would take place as long as it does not conflict with his role as senator-judge in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato C. Corona and the morning legislative plenary sessions of the Senate, Lacson pointed out. And why not? Lacson served as the head of the Task Force Habagat of Estrada’s Presidential Anti-Crime Commission (PACC). The elder Estrada was then the Vice President from 1992 to 1998.

Lacson was also appointed by Estrada as the director-general of the Philippine National Police (PNP) during the abbreviated presidency of Estrada from 1998 to January, 2001. The estrangement between the two came about when Lacson learned that Estrada, when asked by media in Malabon to comment on the murder of publicist Salvador “Bubby’’ Dacer and his driver, Emmanuel Corbito, replied that he (Lacson) should be the one to answer. “I think it was on a campaign trail in 2008 or 2009.’’ Lacson said he felt Estrada was insinuating that he had a hand in the death of Dacer and his driver and that he was piqued because he had nothing to do with the Dacer-Corbito double murder case.

“Doon ako napikon, and I took the floor (Senate session hall) on a matter of personal privilege to clear the air, na ilabas ang katotohanan, wala akong kinalaman. Doon ako medyo napikon sa kanya, puwede naman niya i-deny on his own, bakit kailangan magturo pa siya? Eh alam naman niyang doon ako nagkamalaas-malas,’’ he said.
