Chinese media told: Exercise restraint

THE Philippine government urged China on Saturday to ask Chinese media to exercise restraint on their reporting to ease tension over the Panatag or Scarborough Shoal off West Philippine Sea.
Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda made the statement after Defense Secretary Voltare Gazmin and Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie met last Monday and reportedly agreed to exercise restraint in making statements on the issue.
“I think we have done and we have been prudent in our statements. We have, from the very, very start, we have emphasized that we intend to de-escalate tensions,” Lacierda said.
“There is no benefit for us to be recalcitrant in our statements,” he added.
Lacierda said that from President Benigno Aquino III, to Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario and to the various spokespersons of the government, they have exercised restraint and prudence on their statements.
“I suppose it would be good if our Chinese counterparts would also assist Chinese media…to exercise restraint in their interest of resolving tensions and in the interest of not sowing unwanted or unneeded tensions between two countries especially among the people,” he said.
China Daily, in its opinion page, reportedly criticized the Philippines for its alleged illegal occupation of islands in the West Philippine Sea, which it said belongs to China.
Both Manila and Beijing have been claiming the Panatag Shoal, which China calls as Huangyan Island.
