Pedro Abad Santos birthday commemorated

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–Former Senator Maria Ana Consuelo “Jamby” Madrigal and Mayor Oscar Rodriguez led the 137th birth anniversary commemoration of local hero Pedro Abad Santos here Wednesday.
The commemoration was highlighted by a wreath-laying at the monument of Abad Santos inside the Heroes Hall Compound, an annex of the city hall. The hero was also given a 21-gun salute.
Aside from Madrigal and Rodriguez, the celebration, held at the Heroes Hall here, was also attended by Vice Mayor Edwin Santiago, local officials, city employees, townsfolk, students and descendants of Abad Santos.
In her message, Madrigal said, “I came here as a Kapampangan and I am proud to be an Abad Santos.
Like my grandfathers Pedro and Jose Abad Santos, I will continue their fight for the poor.”
Jose Abad Santos, who died at the hands of the Imperial Japanese when he refused to collaborate with the enemy, is also a hero like his brother Pedro.
Pedro Abad Santos is also known as Don Perico. He was born in then tow n of San Fernando on January 31, 1876. He was a major under Gen. Maximino Hizon during the Filipino-American War. From 1916-1922 he was a representative of the Second District of Pampanga. Also in 1922, he was appointed as member of the Philippine Mission for Independence in the United States.
Don Perico was the founder of the Socialist Party of the Philippines and the second president of the Communist Party of the Philippines in 1932. He was also the founder of the “Aguman Ning Maldang Talapagobra” (a worker’s union) and the first Worshipful Master of Lodge 48 of the Masons.
Rodriguez said, “Pinagseselabrahan po natin ang ganito upang maalala natin ang buhay at ginawa ng ating mga bayani at ating maging huwaran.”
Wenny Versoza, 22, a graduating student from a nearby school, said, “Sana ganito ang ating mga politico kagaya ng mga bayani natin para sa ikakaunlad ng bansa natin.”
While Marife Estarda, a resident of Barangay San Juan here, said, “Gustong-gusto ko na dumalo sa mga ganitong okasyon dahil marami akong natutunan sa history ng bayan natin kagaya ng kay Pedro Abad Santos.”
